Synopsis
Dirty dentures pose both aesthetic and health problems for the wearer. Dental personnel should have knowledge of various techniques and materials available to clean and maintain dentures in a hygienic state to be able to provide appropriate instructions to patients. Brushing alone with toothpaste or with a brush alone is insufficient to control the denture plaque. Soaking in a diluted bleach solution or a commercial effervescent product for less than an hour are effective tools for cleaning dentures. Ultrasonic is more effective but not widely used. Microwave treatment and air drying effectively kill organisms but may not eliminate antigenic irritants. Daily application of silicone polymer to the denture surface is a promising new development in denture cleaning technology, which interferes with bacterial adhesion.
