Synopsis
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a common non-communicable disease that affects more than 10% of the adult population and causes approximately 3.2 million deaths worldwide each year. COPD is a major cause of chronic morbidity. Smoking is the most important cause of COPD in developed and developing countries. Chronic and progressive dyspnea, chronic cough and expectoration are the most common symptoms of COPD. Due to the symptoms experienced by COPD patients, the need for care and support increases and the quality of life decreases. The nurse has an important role in symptom management and prevention of complications, improving exercise capacity, improving quality of life and coping effectively with the disease in COPD patients.
