Synopsis

This study examines the types, mechanisms and risk factors of injuries in professional and recreational alpine skiers. Professional skiers experience serious trauma such as knee and lower extremity injuries due to high performance requirements, while shoulder and upper extremity injuries are more common among recreational skiers. Individual (age, gender), environmental (piste conditions, weather) and equipment-related factors that increase injury risks are discussed. This chapter presents injury prevention strategies for athletes at different levels and makes recommendations to improve sport safety.
