Synopsis

The continuously increasing number of waste tires and their improper management are a major global environmental problem since these wastes are not biodegradable. Waste tires stored in landfills and stockpiles leak toxic chemicals into the environment, cause various diseases by creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes and rats, and fuel cause fires that are difficult to extinguish. Therefore, their use in soil, concrete and asphalt modification may be a good option for their disposal. This study compiles and examines the published studies conducted by various researchers to investigate the use of different forms of waste tires such as granulated rubber, tire polishing products, tire pieces, tire chips and powdered rubber in various civil engineering applications. Therefore, some of the studies on the utilization of these wastes in different areas such as soil stabilization, production of cement and asphalt concretes, construction and maintenance of highways and railways, production of fluid fills and seismic isolation systems are mentioned. The study results show that the use of waste tire products in various civil engineering applications may be an economical solution and may also provide a good option for their disposal. However, it is thought that further research and examination is needed to reinforce the comments made by past researchers on these issues.
