Synopsis
Crab barrel syndrome is considered as a metaphorical concept is frequently encountered in both public and private sector organisations have made ‘If I can't do it, you can't do it!’ a philosophy. This metaphor is based on the analogy of crabs in a barrel pulling those who want to get out of the barrel back into the barrel, is defined as a phenomenon in which the human element, which is one of the most basic production factors of organisations, does not want and cannot attract the rise, success and positive reputation of their friends both in management levels and in the hierarchical structure, and therefore aims to pull the successful ones down with negative behavioural patterns. In fact, this syndrome is defined as an undesirable situation in organisations, is still considered as a dark aspect in the field of organisational behaviour continues to exist with the support of employees, managers, organisational structure, organisational climate and organisational culture. The study was carried out because it is a new phenomenon in the field of organisational behaviour and is among the issues that require awareness and struggle for organisational success. The study methodology was carried out by literature review within the scope of qualitative research method as exploratory research. In the study, it was determined the crab barrel syndrome creates negative results both at the organisational and individual level and that in the process of combating this phenomenon, it is necessary to ensure the formation of an organisational culture, an organisational structure in which the fair attitudes of the management staff are effective and an effective intra-organisational communication channel.
