Synopsis

The pelvic floor includes muscles, ligaments and fascia. The pelvic floor is involved in the stability of the pelvic girdle, muscle tone, incontinence, urination/defecation and the mechanism for sexual intercourse. Pelvic floor dysfunction, a degenerative disease in women, is defined as the loosening of the tissues supporting the pelvic floor caused by degeneration or injury of the female pelvic floor muscles and connective tissues. Pelvic floor dysfunction, which includes a range of conditions such as urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and sexual dysfunction, is common among women and affects quality of life. The prevalence of pelvic floor dysfunction is quite high, with rates as high as 37.7% reported among women in some regions. Lifestyle behaviors play a crucial role in the management and prevention of pelvic floor dysfunction. Implementation of lifestyle changes and adoption of healthy lifestyle behaviors are recommended for pelvic floor dysfunction because they have no side effects and provide significant and long-term improvement in symptoms. At the same time, lifestyle changes are also shown as a preventive treatment option to prevent disorders that may be seen in pelvic floor dysfunction. The aim of healthy lifestyle behaviors is to identify the habits of the individual and to identify the lifestyle that may cause pelvic floor dysfunction and to change the risk factors that can be controlled. Healthy lifestyle behaviors include weight control (prevention of obesity), avoiding smoking, reducing caffeine consumption, reducing the risk of constipation by regulating diet, physical exercise and kegel exercises. Therefore, the aim of this chapter is to examine pelvic floor dysfunction and healthy lifestyle behaviors.
