Synopsis
Approximately 20,000 earthquakes occur worldwide each year, resulting in significant loss of life, damage to infrastructure and economic instability. Due to its location in a seismically active geography, Turkey is among the countries most affected by earthquakes, accounting for 3.5% of the world's earthquake-related loss of life. Various international and national strategies have been developed for disaster preparedness and management. Turkey's National Earthquake Strategy and Action Plan (NESAP-2023) includes targets such as strengthening critical infrastructures, raising public awareness and integrating technological innovations. In addition, international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the European Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid Operations (ECHO) provide important support in earthquake preparedness and response. Ensuring community preparedness for earthquakes is achieved through education and information sharing. The use of technology in emergency response processes is critical for damage assessment and resource allocation. With lessons learned from past seismic events, Turkey aims to mitigate the impacts of future earthquakes and increase the overall resilience of society.
Consequently, this study comprehensively addresses the adverse impacts of earthquakes on public health and the preparedness and response strategies to mitigate these impacts.
