Synopsis

Identity-based leadership is a perspective that aims to understand how individual and social identities interact in leadership processes. This perspective focuses not only on the leader's own identity but also on the identities of their followers and the group identity. In order to create an effective leadership environment, the leader must establish a strong bond with their followers by displaying an identity that is compatible with group values. This approach is closely related to social identity theory, in which individuals define themselves through group membership. Social identity refers to how individuals define themselves when they belong to a group. By strengthening this sense of belonging, the leader ensures that followers feel a common identity and increases their influence within the group. This leadership model encourages commitment to group identity and increases motivation towards group goals. The compatibility between the leader's identity and the group's identity strengthens the motivation of followers and increases their willingness to achieve goals. Identity-based leadership explains how individual and social identities integrate with group dynamics and how this combination shapes the leader's influence. When the leader follows a path that is compatible with the group's identity and goals, they exhibit effective leadership and the group achieves success. With this approach, the leader strengthens the leader-follower relationship, increases the effectiveness of decision-making processes, and deepens the commitment of followers within the group. This book chapter examines the multidimensional approach to identity-based leadership, providing both theoretical and practical guidance on how leadership should be understood in the context of the complex relationships between group and individual identities.
