Synopsis

According to both ancient inscriptions and the theoretical approaches of linguistics, it is known that musical activities by human beings emerged through the imitation of nature and animal sounds. Therefore, it seems possible to say that this activity dates back to ancient civilizations. The pursuit of music, which has taken on a universal structure over time, can also be defined as a communicative action and sharing tool used from history to the present day. At the same time, music, which is the mirror of the individual's spiritual world, is undoubtedly accompanied by emotions and thoughts as well as being an artistic activity. This action, which contains cultural codes, has become a collective activity that is more easily accessible with the development of digital platforms. Therefore, it can be said that music, which has turned into an industrial sector and is rapidly consumed, has naturally lost its artistic naivety and entered a process of decadence over time. As with all popular products that are in need and available for consumption, it is inevitable that song lyrics and music will not be unaffected by this process.

Based on this paradigm, this research aims to reveal the dimensions of the changes and transformations in the content of hit lyrics between the 1990s and 2020s in terms of language corruption. Because one of the most important building blocks of music, which is defined as a 'timbre', is undoubtedly music lyrics. Analyzing this negative degeneration process of lyrics, which have an important position in social life and have moved away from the artistic perspective in the process, based on scientific data makes this study meaningful.  In this respect, it is important to determine to what extent the lyrics, which are followed and consumed by large social masses, corrupt the language and communication skills that constitute cultural dynamics. This research, which was conducted based on the basic hypothesis that "song lyrics have degenerated significantly between the 1990s and 2020s", was limited to hit song lyrics selected periodically. In this context, a total of 8 (eight) songs were analyzed by including 2 hit songs in the sample based on four periods with 10-year intervals starting from 1990. From the data analyzed semantically and metaphorically with the content analysis method, significant findings were reached in support of the basic hypothesis put forward at the beginning of the research.
