The Importance of Tournaments in the Development of Turkish Sports Infrastructure: The Case of Turkish Tennis Federation

Synopsis

The aim of this research is to examine in detail the tournament organizations and sportive activities of the Turkish Tennis Federation in 2023. The Turkish Tennis Federation is the highest organization that manages both the political, bureaucratic and sportive structuring of Turkish Tennis and has the power of representation in the international arena. It produces policies for the development of tennis and ensures that these policies are implemented equally throughout the country. It also organizes plans and programs through the relevant boards to train all coaches in the country and to follow their development. Federation presidents are elected every 4 years and manage the federation through their boards of directors.

This research is described according to a quantitative research design. The national level tournaments held between January 1, 2023 and December 30, 2023 from the Turkish Tennis Federation I-Court system were examined and the number of athletes participating in these tournaments, provinces, tournaments according to age categories were described as statistics. Data sources in the research were obtained from the I-court system. The data obtained as a result of the research were evaluated by descriptive analysis and the data obtained were presented with frequency, percentage and graphical figures based on them.

As a result, Turkish Tennis Federation organized 350 national tournaments in 2023 and 57000 athletes participated in these tournaments. According to the age categories, the number of tournament participants in the 18+ category ranked first with 33706 (59%), while the 8-9-10 age category ranked second with 10922 (19%). Again, according to the data obtained, the lowest number of participants was obtained with 1674 athletes in the 16-age category (3%). According to the distribution of tournaments by provinces, Istanbul ranked first with 82 organizations, while Izmir ranked second with 46 tournaments. Afyonkarahisar, Elâzığ, Iğdır and Van took part in the organization of the federation with a single tournament. In addition, when compared with the organizations of several Olympic federations, it was seen that the Athletics Federation organized 85 (17%) national organizations, the Karate Federation organized 11 (2%) national organizations, the Badminton Federation organized 20 (4%) organizations, and the Table Tennis Federation organized 21 (4%) organizations.  The Turkish Tennis Federation has realized the highest number of national and international organizations among the autonomous federations in Turkey and has become the federation with the highest number of organizations in the history of Turkish Sports.
