Synopsis

After the Kahramanmaraş earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, more than 53 thousand people lost their lives, more than 100 thousand people were injured, many buildings were damaged and destroyed, and more than three million people migrated from the earthquake region. Due to countless negativities like this, the importance of studies on disaster risk reduction and resilience has once again been seen in the most brutal way. All studies on disaster statistics conducted around the world and in Türkiye reveal that there has been a significant increase in the number, frequency, impact area and damage caused by natural disasters and that these numbers will continue to increase in the coming years. All projections regarding the population indicate that the population living in cities will increase much more in the coming years, which will increase the hazard and risk of disasters. For these reasons, local governments have or should have very important duties in order to create disaster-resistant cities.
