Synopsis

Like all natural events, earthquakes it is one of the natural events that threaten residential areas and cause the change of living spaces. Although human beings used the experiences they gained after the earthquake when determining the next settlement area, they suffered great economic, sociological, and cultural losses. During this process until today, scientists and local governments have carried out multidisciplinary studies such as geoscience, spatial planning, and geographic information systems studies on the selection of cities compatible with nature. In our country, since 1940, in order to design earthquake-resistant structures, various legislative studies have been carried out in certain periods in order to ensure that soil and foundation studies, in which the physical parameters of the soil required during the project phase of buildings and building-type structures are determined, can be carried out at the same standards throughout the country. In this study, legal regulations published from the past to the present were examined from a geophysical perspective. After the legal regulations are examined, it is thought that geophysical research is not sufficiently included in laws, statutes, regulations, circulars and similar norms, and this situation causes some deficiencies in the realization of earthquake-resistant building design. Making our cities earthquake-resistant is only possible by scientifically establishing the earthquake-soil-structure relationship with correct tests and studies. In particular, the determination of the deep soil structure through geophysical research should be included and detailed in regulations and similar norms. In addition, it is thought that site-specific seismic hazard analyses should be developed and updated for each province, taking into account local site effect conditions.
