Synopsis
The purpose of this chapter is to introduce the Moorish Science Temple of America movement, which emerged among African Americans in America in the early twentieth century. This movement emerged on the stage of history as a reaction to institutional racism against black people in America and as a unique religious-ethnic group by using Islamic terminology for the first time. Today, its effectiveness and influence are almost non-existent. However, it is the first phase of African Americans' encounter with Islam and its terminology. For this reason, in this section, we aimed to briefly introduce the emergence of the mentioned movement on the stage of history and its basic ideas - along with short observations we made among the members of the movement. The fact that there is no study on this movement in the Turkish academic world yet is the main reason why we keep this introduction short and concise for now. Therefore, how to evaluate the movement in the context of the sociology of religious groups, whether it is a religious or ethnic movement, whether it can be analyzed within new religious movements, a detailed overview of the movement from its birth to the present day, its current situation, etc. We have not included associated theoretical and scientific debates. Our study will briefly discuss the founder of the movement, its basic beliefs, rituals and where it evolved after the death of its founder. Our section will end with a short conclusion and proposal.
