Synopsis
This study was carried out in Derik Geographical unit, which is the origin of the Halhalı Olive variety in Turkey. In the study, it is aimed to evaluate the Halhalı Olive variety, which is an important source of income in the region, in the context of rural development and to prepare plans for the protection of olive areas that are adversely affected by the spatial development of the city. For this purpose, the study area was drawn with the Google Earth program and the olive production areas were determined by processing the database in the Arg GIS 10.5 software environment. In the second stage, the hydrographic, climatic, geomorphological and pedological demands of Halhali Olive variety, which are geographical requirements, were investigated and the characteristics were determined. Considering the hydrographic features, the Zeytinpınar valley located in the production area and the olive groves in the Söğütözü neighborhood, which is the continuation of these olive groves, are irrigated by the Zeytinpınar Stream. In addition, the water needs of the olive groves in the Gab Valley are supplied from the Gab Stream. When the climatic demands of olive groves are examined, they show parallel values with the climatic demands in the Mediterranean Basin. When the geomorphological and pedological demands were examined, it was determined that the olive groves were grown in the valley, and the soil characteristics were Limeless Brown forest soils and Brown forest soils. In the last stage, it consists of planning proposals for increasing the return of olives to the district in the context of rural development and determining and protecting these production areas. This study will be a preliminary resource for city planning and protection of agricultural areas for managers. It is aimed that these production areas in the Derik Geographical unit, which is the origin of the Halhalı olive variety, will be supported by GIS and evaluated in the context of rural development and the protection of olive areas will contribute to the literature and science.
