Synopsis
Prediction of earthquake-induced crest settlements is extremely important in the design of embankment dams. If deformations during an earthquake exceed the freeboard, it may cause dam failure due to overtopping. Many methods are used to determine the deformations that will occur under seismic loads in embankment dams. The simplified Newmark approach, empirical and semi-empirical approaches are the first evaluation methods used to examine the behavior of dams during earthquakes. However, it is impossible to say that these methods accurately predict the actual deformation form and magnitude. For this reason, estimating earthquake-induced crest settlements in embankment dams using different approaches rather than a single method and comparing the results is much more appropriate.
