Synopsis
In parallel with the technological developments inintensive care units, it ensures the survival of moreacutely critical patients. Approximately 5-11% of patients who arehospitalized from acute critical illness in Intensive Care Units, and according to some researchers, 33% are on mechanical ventilation (MV) and continues to live as a chronic critical illness (CCI) dependent on other intensive care treatments. The reason for this difference is that there is no accepted
Consensus for the term CCI. Although this syndrome has been recognized since the 1980s, there is no full consensus on its definition, but it has been defined as 'long stay on mechanical ventilation (MV)' or 'need for tracheotomy due to prolonged MV'. In order to prevent the increase in CCI, it is recommended that the risk group should be determined and protocols and strategies should be developed. In this section the definitions for CCI patients used to date are examined.
