Mathematics education should focus on students' ability to solve daily life problems with mathematical knowledge and skills. In basic education, during the period when students are introduced to mathematics and begin to think, it is critical for teachers to convey mathematical thinking effectively (Tekin and Tekin, 2004). In this process, mathematics education should aim not only at the application of formulas but also at the development of reasoning and analytical skills. Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) defines mathematical literacy as the capacity to solve daily life problems with mathematics (EARGED, 2005). A good mathematics education should support students to become mathematically literate individuals. Educators should play an important role in providing students with mathematical literacy skills in the mathematics education process. PISA is a tool that measures the skills students need to compete at the global level. Mathematics literacy is one of the basic skills measured in PISA exams. In this context, it is important for countries to develop mathematics education policies by focusing on PISA results and to ensure that students acquire 21st century skills. Strengthening mathematical literacy can make individuals successful in the information society by increasing their ability to solve complex problems and interact on a global level. As a result, mathematical literacy in the 21st century has critical importance as the ability of individuals to solve the problems they encounter in daily life with mathematics.
