Synopsis

The continuous increase in production, consumption and trade and the rapid depletion of natural resources have led to efforts to ensure the sustainability of clean water, as a scarce asset. Population, consumption and water use are increasing all day by day worldwide, but clean water resources are constantly decreasing. Protecting clean water and reducing its use has become a necessity rather than a choice. Water that is an important component of economic activities as well as human life, causes global fresh water resources to decrease day by day due to increasing population, climate change and industrialization. Water footprint is the total amount of directly or indirectly used water that can be calculated for a person, business, region, or country. Clean water is used throughout all activities in the supply chain, including distribution, production, and supply. Businesses' proactive behaviour regarding water sustainability in their supply chain processes is seen as an important factor in protecting freshwater resources as a scarce resource. The aim of this study is to evaluate the water footprint of businesses, which are seen as an important factor in water consumption, in terms of supply chain management. The research involved a systematic literature review on the international literature of water footprint research in supply chain management. In this context, articles published in the Web of Science database, written in English and containing the keywords "supply chain" and "water footprint" in the title, were scanned and 24 articles were found within the determined criteria. The articles were examined for content, and literature developments were evaluated.
