Synopsis

This study aims to explain the physical destruction caused by disasters as a social phenomenon, as well as the change and transformation it creates in ordinary individuals and society, on the axis of the disaster-sociology relationship. In this context, the study focuses on the main topics of daily life and sociology, disaster and social life, resilience and transformation of daily life, and aims to examine the short and long-term effects of disasters not only from a macro perspective, but also through the differences they create on the micro behaviours of the ordinary individual.

Moreover, considering the transformation of daily life after disasters and earthquakes, especially depending on the level of physical destruction, disruptions and significant changes come to the forefront in areas such as providing shelter, providing nutrition opportunities, access to health services, meeting daily physical needs, meeting educational and social needs and transportation. As observed especially in the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes that occurred on February 6, 2023, the ordinary individual's participation in proactive solidarity and aid activities and participation in rescue activities immediately after the disaster/earthquake reveal that new solidarity networks and social interaction channels have been built in a sociological sense. Therefore, the study aims to provide a sociological approach, not just focusing on  the concept of disaster, through individual and society-oriented analyses in post-disaster intervention, recovery and reconstruction processes.
