Ostracism in the Workplace

Synopsis

The uncertainty and intense competitive environment in which organizations find themselves brings to the fore issues based on the effectiveness and welfare of human resources, which are among their strategic resources. Human resources' ability to demonstrate creative and innovative solutions by adhering to organizational goals and showing positive role behavior within organizational citizenship behavior directly affects the competitive advantage and overall performance of organizations. However, recently increasing competitive conditions, diversity in the workforce and the competitive culture in the organizational environment bring up workplace ostracismas a new phenomenon that disrupts the synergy of the organization. Ostracism in the workplace, which is observed as ignoring, neglecting, isolating the employee in the work environment and openly rejecting communication attempts, triggers many negative processes, both directly and indirectly, for both the individual and the organization. It significantly harms the psychological and physical health of the individual and the performance and effectiveness of the organization. At this point, it is an issue that should be emphasized by both senior management and human resources professionals in terms of its negative effects. In this context, in this section of the book, the origin of the concept, the conditions for its formation, and its individual and organizational consequences are discussed in detail in order to raise awareness of workplace ostracism. In the conclusion section, recommendations for managers and policy makers are shared. It is evaluated that the measures and results to be taken against ostracism in the workplace will contribute significantly to the employee's presence in a healthy organizational climate, personal well-being and organizational outcomes.
