Synopsis

The Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II ascended to the throne as the 34th sultan of the Ottoman Empire on 31 August 1876, after his elder brother, Sultan Murad V, was dethroned. After 33 years on the throne, he was dethroned on 27 April 1909, after the 31 March Incident. In this study, the dethronement of Sultan Abdulhamid II after the 31 March Incident, the events that followed, and what was mentioned about Sultan Abdulhamid II on this occasion are discussed. The main sources of this historical research based on document analysis are the Austro-Hungarian press. As a result of the research, it was seen that Sultan Abdulhamid II accepted his dethronement with a fatalistic understanding, and in general, the change of throne was considered as a positive event in diplomatic circles. It has been seen that Sultan Abdulhamid II was reflected in the aforementioned news as a despotic ruler and mostly with his negative traits, and his diplomatic skills in interstate relations were mentioned as almost the only positive trait about him.
