Synopsis
Scabies has become a major health problem and a burden on health systems all over the world. The prevalence of scabies is not known exactly, but is estimated to be higher than reported. The disease is usually transmitted through skin contact or from objects. Scabies infestation occurs in people of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic statuses. The disease occurs most often in conditions of overcrowding, poverty, lack of hygiene and difficulty in accessing healthcare facilities. Scabies epidemics occur in residential areas such as nursing homes, nurseries, barracks (military facilities), prisons and student dormitories. High rates are reported among healthcare professionals. For these reasons, scabies has become an important health problem and a burden on health systems around the world. Healthcare professionals are expected to be aware of the emergence of scabies and to perform comprehensive examinations, especially if patients are asymptomatic.
