Synopsis
Medical Deontology covers the knowledge of obligations within the medical profession. When we look at the development adventure of medicine, it can be said that deontological principles always find their way. The concepts of usefulness, non-harming, justice and autonomy, which are known as the basic codes of medical ethics today, have been included in the science of medicine since Hippocrates. When we look at the history of medicine holistically, we can see the reflections of each of these principles in the approaches displayed in communication and interaction with the patient. As we come to our own civilization and recent history, we can give examples of this on the basis of scientists. In the context of modernization movements in the last period of the Ottoman Empire, the XIX. Doctor Nurican Efendi (1828-1898), one of the teachers who gave the first deontology lessons in the Mekteb-i Tıbbiye, which was opened in the 19th century, is one of the important names in this field. Getting to know Nurican Efendi and his works, a person who has left works in the history of medicine and deontology, will lead us to better understand our history of medicine. In this sense, in this study, the work of Doctor Nurican Efendi called "The Service of Muslims to Medicine" is emphasized.
