Synopsis

The parotid gland is the largest of the salivary glands and is located in the anterior-lower part of the auricle on both halves of the face. The approximate weight of each of the parotid glands is 20-30 grams. The parotid gland is 5.8 centimeters in the craniocaudal direction and 3.4 centimeters in the ventrodorsal direction. It is located between the processus (proc.) mastoideus of the mastoid bone and the ramus mandible of the mandibular bone. The parotid gland is an irregular gland with appendages. The reason for its irregularity is that it develops by invagination of the epithelium into the cervical fascia in embryonic life. It also includes the facial nerve and its branches, external carotid artery (ACE) and its branches, lymph nodes, autonomic and sensory nerves, vena (v.) retromandibularis (posterior facial vein), which are anatomically adjacent structures during development. It is covered by the superficial leaf of the deep cervical fascia. The parotid gland is located in an area with irregular borders.
The boundaries of this region ; Inferiorly, the imaginary line drawn between the mastoid process of the mastoid bone and the angulus of the mandibular bone forms the styloid process and associated muscles in the deep plane. Superiorly, it forms the arch of the zygomatic bone. It forms the external auditory canal wall posteriorly and M. Massetericus anteriorly. In the medial part, it forms the Parapharyngeal region and the internal jugular vein and internal caroid artery within this region.
