Sustainable Environmental Education in Preschool: Examining the Zero Waste Approach

Synopsis

The main aim of this study is to examine the Zero Waste Project, one of Turkey’s most powerful projects in the environmental field, according to the views of preschool teachers. Case study, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. The study group consists of 20 preschool teachers working in public schools in Alaplı district of Zonguldak province, determined by purposeful sampling method. In the selection of the sample, easily accessible case sampling and criterion sampling, which are among the purposeful sampling methods, were used. A semi-structured interview form was used to collect the data of the research. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data obtained from the interviews. The first sub-problem of the research is to understand the views of preschool teachers on the concept of sustainability and sustainable environmental education, the second sub-problem aims to understand the views of preschool teachers on the Zero Waste Project, and the third sub-problem is to understand the general views of preschool teachers on the Zero Waste Project. is addressed. The results of this study indicate the need to increase the knowledge level of preschool teachers in the fields of sustainability and environmental education, and the necessity for municipalities to take a more active role in effectively implementing the Zero Waste Project.
