Synopsis
Turkish proverbs exhibit a linguistic structure that reinforces gender roles and perpetuates patriarchal norms. In this study, the idealized representations of femininity and masculinity in proverbs are examined and gender relations between men and women are discussed. While proverbs define femininity in terms of sacrifice, obedience, honor, motherhood and domestic roles, they confine women to certain stereotypes. Women are idealized as passive, coy and in need of guidance from family elders. Masculinity, on the other hand, is associated with strength, courage, authority and the protection of honor and is constructed as the perpetuator of the patriarchal order. While proverbs define masculinity as the leader of the social structure, they place women in a more supportive position. For example, the proverb “Father's tax is a favor, husband's tax is satisfaction” ignores the economic independence of women and presents their dependence on their fathers and husbands as a natural order. Similarly, the woman, who is positioned as an identity that supports the success of her man, takes a back seat in social life. This situation contributes to the sustainability of social norms and limits women's emancipation processes. In today's society, proverbs and stereotypes still have a strong influence. While women struggle for freedom and equality, patriarchal ideology continues to dominate the social structure. While femininity is defined by motherhood, male childbearing, subservience and domestic responsibilities, masculinity is presented as a status that includes leadership and authority. These discourses continue to exist as factors that prevent gender equality. Language is one of the most important tools that construct and transmit social values. Through discourses such as proverbs, gender roles are transmitted from generation to generation and inequality is reinforced. Therefore, language needs to be critically re-evaluated in order to achieve gender equality. Questioning and transforming proverbs is an important step towards eliminating inequalities between male and female identities. Developing alternative discourses is essential to create a conscious transformation. In line with gender equality, changing the patterns in language and constructing new meanings will contribute to the creation of a social order where women and men can live with equal rights and opportunities.
