Synopsis
This study examines new design approaches to the concept of the book in its broadest definition, considering its historical, functional, and design-related meanings, with a particular focus on the “object book.” It emphasizes the transformation of the book from a mere physical object into a medium of design and experience. In this context, Kitap, a collaborative work by Bülent Erkmen and Ferit Edgü, is analyzed. This work develops a design language that challenges the traditional structure of the book, exploring how both visual and textual elements can be reconfigured. Furthermore, it suggests that a book can resemble a theater stage and can be read and experienced like a cinematic narrative. The study underscores the notion that the reader should not only engage with the text but also experience the book as a whole.
Through the critical lens of Erkmen and Edgü, who reverse conventional design practices, the study explores the transformation of the book and its potential to offer new reading experiences. This approach demonstrates that the book is not merely a carrier of texts but an object that can be experienced as a whole. In this context, the work Kitap, designed through the collaboration of Bülent Erkmen and Ferit Edgü, is presented as an example. Kitap, which serves as a reinterpretation of textual, visual, and physical features of the book, questions traditional design paradigms and seeks new possibilities unique to the book.
The findings of the study pave the way for potential new designs. In this context, a parallel is drawn between the discussed design and Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. Both works overturn traditional conventions to create a new language, offering an interdisciplinary proposal by highlighting their effort to innovate and break established norms.
