Synopsis

Along with industrialization, natural resources have been used uncarefully to sustain production and consumption for purposes such as economic development and increasing the level of welfare from the 18th century to the present day. However, increasing consumption levels have caused continued environmental degradation, threatening the idea of sustainable development. Therefore, the development of socio-economic systems that ensure a high quality of life while minimizing negative environmental impacts has become a crucial goal for contemporary societies. For this purpose, consumers need to be offered options that contribute to sustainability and minimize environmental damage. Besides being as a crucial source of raw materials for the production of wood and non-wood forest products, forests have important ecological functions. Forestry is an industry with a large environmental footprint. However, when operations conducted sustainable, the potential to contribute to the environment is high. Forests must be managed in a manner that is environmentally sustainable while also providing social and economic benefits to society. For this reason, international environmental non-governmental organizations have established certification systems to ensure that the world's forests are managed responsibly in social, environmental, and economic terms. The aim of this research is to explain the certification processes related to forests and forest products and to assess these certifications from the perspective of sustainable consumption.
