Synopsis

Technostress refers to the psychological and physical pressure that individuals experience as a result of having difficulty adapting to rapidly developing information and communication technologies. While technological innovations increase productivity by accelerating work processes, they also create negative effects such as anxiety, burnout, cognitive fatigue, and work-life imbalance in employees. In the literature, technostress creators, referred to as technostressors, are classified as techno-overload, techno-invasion, techno-complexity, techno-insecurity, and techno-uncertainty. These technostressors blur the boundaries between employees’ work and life, leading to a disruption of work-life balance. Work-life balance means that individuals can maintain their work and personal lives in a balanced manner. However, today’s widespread digitalization, the need to be constantly online and the infiltration of work into private life threaten the balance by increasing individuals’ workload. According to the Job Demands-Resources Theory, technostressors increase job demands, leading to burnout and loss of motivation in employees. Individual and organizational strategies should be developed to reduce the effects of technostress. Digital detox applications, setting limits on technology use, flexible working hours, stress management training, and providing technical support can help employees maintain work-life balance. In addition, employers’ implementation of policies that support work-life balance will contribute to corporate success by increasing employee productivity. Therefore, managing technostress and ensuring work-life balance is of critical importance for a sustainable work environment. The section consists of three main headings. In the first main headings, the concept of technostress, its definition, dimensions, effects, and prevention methods are discussed. In the second main headings, the concept of work-life balance, its definition, determinants are explained, and the importance of work-life balance and ways to achieve work-life balance are included. In the third main headings, the relationship between technostress and work-life balance is examined.
