Synopsis

With digitalization, the transformation process, in which tasks are largely delegated to artificial intelligence and information systems, is leading to the disappearance of some professions and the reshaping of others through integration with technology. Despite concerns that the digitalization and artificial intelligence revolution will reduce the need for labor and increase unemployment, predictions are increasing that it will actually create more new jobs and professions. On the other hand, the future world of work will require employees who can adapt to new working methods, business models, and evolving technologies, and who possess the competencies and skills to effectively utilize these technologies. Identifying which of these digital competencies and skills are becoming obsolete and which are necessary for the future of work is of great importance.

Technological advancements require a smaller, highly skilled, and well-paid workforce. Emerging fields such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cybersecurity are some of the new areas, while professions like big data specialists, robot repair technicians, data analysts, autonomous and electric vehicle experts, and environmental and renewable energy engineering are among the new occupations. Additionally, analytical and innovative thinking, reasoning, emotional intelligence, programming, and coordination are among the sought-after skills.

The growth of new professions and competencies is being driven by goals, efforts, and investments aimed at adapting to climate change and reducing carbon emissions. Both the private and public sectors must establish the necessary infrastructure for new job fields, professions, and the skills they require, and governments should prepare policies to facilitate the transition process. Through university-industry collaboration, technology-supported training programs should be developed to equip the workforce with digital competencies and skills, helping them adapt to new technologies. Otherwise, resistance to change and a lack of preparedness will cause institutions and societies to fall behind in competitiveness and face the risk of obsolescence.
