Synopsis

This study aims to examine the strategic documents related to agricultural and food policies of municipalities in Turkey. While local governments had limited authority over agriculture and food in the early 2000s, recent legislative changes have led to the development of new strategies in this field. The study analyzes the framework of municipal food strategy documents, focusing on their formulation processes and their impact on urban populations’ access to nutrition. Additionally, the integration of sustainable agriculture, climate change, and environmental policies into these strategies is discussed. Through the case of İzmir Karşıyaka Municipality, the role of local governments in food policies is assessed, and future directions are explored.
