Synopsis
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the place and importance of digital stories as a multimedia material in social studies education. Technology is developing every day and as a natural result of this situation, educational activities in the classroom are also experiencing a technology-based transformation. Today’s classrooms there are many multimedia material used and one of these multimedia materials is digital stories. The origins of digital stories has been date back to the 1980s. In connection with technological developments, digital stories has recently become one of the most frequently used internet-based educational materials in the classroom. Today digital stories are a very helpful educational material in conveying the gains and objectives of the lesson to students at all levels of education and in making the subjects topics easier to understand for students.
Social studies is one of the most suitable lessons for the using of digital stories. When the gains and skills within the social studies curriculum are taken into consideration, it can be understood how digital stories are important for the social studies lesson. The ingenuity to use digital stories in every field can be highly decisive in conveying the goals of social studies to students. As digital natives, students who are born into a world dominated by technology. Social studies lesson also has great responsibilities in terms of transferring 21st century skills to students. The proper use of digital stories can also make it easier for students to acquire technology-related literacies, which is among the 21st century skills. In addition that, through digital stories, students who can better understand topics which they cannot understand. When the literature is examined, it has been determined that digital stories used in many different fields contribute positively to student success, attitude and motivation.
Within the scope research, first of all, what digital stories are was stated, mentioned both the historical development of social studies in the world and in our country. Also the relationship between social studies lesson and digital stories was discussed. In the conclusion, a general evaluation was made by researcher.
