Synopsis

High-tech exports are one of the main determinants of the global economy and play a critical role in increasing the competitiveness of countries. Because they contribute to economic growth, development and sustainable development as one of the basic elements of innovation and transition to a knowledge economy. However, the fact that high-tech exports are not at the desired level in developing countries is associated with problems such as structural factors and technological capacity deficiencies. Therefore, in this study, the relationship between Turkey's high-tech exports and selected macroeconomic indicators was examined and their changes over time were evaluated. The results obtained reveal that although Turkey's high-tech exports have increased over the years, they still lag behind developed countries. According to the correlation analysis, there are weaker than expected relationships between high-tech exports and R&D expenditures and patent applications. This situation shows that R&D investments in Turkey cannot be used effectively in the commercialization process and their capacity cannot be evaluated sufficiently. In addition, the limited relationship between educated labor force and economic growth indicates that human capital is not effectively integrated into the economy. As a result, in order for Turkey to increase its high-tech exports, it needs to invest more in technology-focused production processes, make R&D expenditures more efficient, and use its educated workforce effectively. In this context, it is of great importance for policy makers to create an ecosystem that encourages technology exports through strategic and innovative reforms.
