Synopsis
Climate crisis is the most important threat facing our planet and urgent action is needed. One of the most important defence mechanisms against the crisis is transition to a green economy. The green economy offers a set of policies that all countries should implement, and it is inevitable for our common future.In this chapter, first, the dimensions of the climate crisis are revealed. The magnitude of the threat is evaluated by revealing greenhouse gas emissions, global temperature increase, sea level rise and biodiversity decline trends, which are the main indicators of climate change. Then, the concept of green economy is discussed on the basis of economic indicators related to green jobs, circular economy, sustainability and green economy. These indicators and renewable energy capacity, investment trends, green infrastructure development and investment, sustainable agriculture and food systems, eco-innovation and technological developments are evaluated respectively. Renewable energy tariff guarantees, carbon pricing and emission trading, sustainable transportation policies, circular economy initiatives and sustainable agriculture and forest management policies are discussed. Finally, the opportunities and costs created by the green economy have been evaluated.
