Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence, Emotional Intelligence, and Perceived Social Support in Physical Education and Sports
Synopsis
This book is based on a master's thesis that examines the levels of bodily/kinesthetic intelligence, emotional intelligence, and perceived social support among students in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Teaching. Conducted with data collected from a total of 1,453 students enrolled in physical education and sports teaching programs across Turkey during the 2013-2014 academic year, this research offers valuable findings that go beyond being merely an academic study. It aims to address a broader audience in the field of education by revealing the qualities and needs of teacher candidates.
Education is a multifaceted process that develops an individual’s physical, mental, emotional, and social aspects. Physical education and sports lessons form a significant part of this process. Bodily/kinesthetic intelligence, one of the dimensions of Howard Gardner’s theory of multiple intelligences, is directly related to sports and physical education classes. In this context, along with bodily intelligence, emotional intelligence and perceived social support also emerge as critical factors in education. Throughout this book, the relationships among these three factors are examined in detail, aiming to contribute to the personal and professional development of educators and teacher candidates.
I would like to express my gratitude to my esteemed advisors, Dr. Erkan Bingöl and Dr. Ender Şenel, who supported and guided me throughout every stage of this study. I also extend my thanks to other academics who contributed their valuable insights and suggestions to my work.
I hope this book serves as a valuable resource for academics, teacher candidates, and practitioners in the fields of education and sports sciences. Understanding the relationships between students' bodily intelligence, emotional intelligence levels, and perceptions of social support can help develop new approaches not only in this field but also in various areas of education. The fundamental premise of this book is the necessity for educators to consider students’ social and emotional development alongside their academic achievements.
I once again thank all individuals who contributed to the creation of this work and hope that it inspires and provides new perspectives to its readers. As Mustafa Kemal Atatürk once said, "The goal of education is to make knowledge a practical and usable tool for humanity." This book aims to highlight the importance of physical education and sports as an integral part of achieving this goal.
Finally, I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to my family and friends, who have always been by my side and supported me every step of the way. This book came to life with their patience and encouragement. I hope this work reflects the meaning they hold for me and offers valuable contributions to its readers.
