Synopsis

Personality is a set of consistent characteristics that determine an individual's patterns of thought, emotion and behavior and make them different from others. Personality shapes how an individual interacts with his/her environment and how he/she directs his/her life. Therefore, it is of great importance for individual and social harmony. This book chapter deals with the main factors that constitute personality and the theoretical approaches to this concept. Biological, familial, socio-cultural and geo-physical factors that determine personality are examined in detail. The theoretical background of personality is explained within the framework of psychoanalytic, differential traits, humanistic, cognitive, biological and behavior/social learning theories. In addition, topics such as dissociative disorders, mood disorders and personality disorders are addressed within the scope of abnormal behaviors; psychological criteria used to evaluate such behaviors are discussed. The chapter introduces the Cattell 16PF Personality Scale, Five Factor Personality Scale, Myers-Briggs Personality Scale and Hacettepe Personality Inventory, which are widely used in the measurement of personality.
