Synopsis

The popularity of team sports has increased with the development of media in the 21st century, and with the emergence of social media, football fandom has gained a new dimension. Social media creates an interactive environment and allows fans to share before and after the match. Football fans who show their support for their teams with different behaviors and actions on social media are referred to as fanatics, evangelists and hooligans. Definitions such as fanaticism, evangelism and hooliganism are frequently used in football fandom, but this leads to a semantic confusion regarding which dimension of fandom these concepts refer to. At this point, it is important to clarify the concepts of fanaticism, evangelism and hooliganism and use them correctly. By conducting a literature review on the concepts, the meanings of these concepts can be clarified and thus the words can be used more understandably and in accordance with their purpose.
