Synopsis
This study aims to fill the lack of literature in this field by examining the interaction between sports architecture and digital technologies. In the literature, there is no bibliometric analysis that addresses the effects of digital technologies on sports architecture from a holistic perspective. Therefore, this study aims to be an important resource that will guide future research and applications of the integration of sports architecture and digital technologies. The integration of digital technologies in sports architecture radically transforms design processes, user experience and facility management. In this context, digital technologies offer innovative solutions that improve the user experience by increasing the design efficiency of sports facilities. Furthermore, digital technologies also lead to significant changes in architectural education, requiring future architects to have technological competences. However, it is also a fact that rapid technological developments may lead to difficulties in harmonizing with traditional architectural practices. This bibliometric analysis identifies research trends and important topics in this field by analyzing 474 publications from the Web of Science (WoS) database between 1999 and 2024. The findings show that digital technologies play a critical role in developing innovative design solutions in sports facilities and the use of virtual models in interior design.
The results of the study reveal a significant increase in publications since 2009, indicating a growing academic interest in the intersection of sport architecture and digital technologies. Sports architecture, when combined with the metaverse, can bring many new opportunities and challenges. In this context, researchers who plan to work on the subject should consider the possible ethical and security risks that these technologies may create while exploring the potential of digital technologies in sports architecture. In addition, it is suggested that they should investigate how metaverse technology can produce effective content in the field of sports architecture. In addition, it should be emphasized how the data collected in the metaverse environment can be used in sports architecture processes. Ethical issues and security concerns that may be encountered in the application of these technologies should also be among the important research areas.
