Synopsis

It addresses injury risk differences between male and female alpine skiers. Due to the nature of skiing, there is a risk of serious injury and these risks differ significantly between the sexes. The chapter examines the effects of physiological, biomechanical and hormonal factors on injury types. Men's greater muscle mass and bone density prevent some injuries, whereas aggressive skiing styles can cause serious trauma. Women, on the other hand, are more prone to knee injuries, especially anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Hormonal changes have been reported to affect connective tissue stability in women and increase the risk of injury. Gender-specific injury prevention strategies have been proposed in the light of strength and balance training, equipment adaptations and technological advances. The study emphasises that a better understanding of these differences is important for the development of strategies to reduce injury risks.
