Synopsis
This chapter deals with the teaching of physical and motor skills and emphasises the critical role of these skills in the physical, cognitive, social and emotional development of individuals. The developmental stages of motor skills are explained and the importance of these skills in the life cycle is emphasised. In the chapter, basic motor skills (locomotor, balancing and object control skills) and fine and gross motor skills are defined and effective strategies for teaching these skills are presented. Teaching methods according to age and level are detailed, and approaches appropriate to the needs of different age groups from early childhood to adulthood are discussed. Furthermore, the effects of gender and environmental factors on motor skill development are discussed and strategies to increase equality of opportunity are suggested. In conclusion, this chapter emphasises that physical and motor skills teaching is a process that supports not only the physical performance of individuals, but also the development of healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
