Synopsis

In history, many groups have͏ used several languages while making their own ways of life and writings. In the Middle Ages, Latin and Arabic were common as languages of science. Persian writing grew with both Persian and Arabic. Likewise, India’s writing past was formed by using Persian. In the growth of writings from Turkic-speaking people, use of Persian and Arabic is hard to ignore In the midst of the Armenians living in the land of the Ottoman Empire, two tongues were also used much. Turks and Armenians, who stayed together for many years, shaped each other’s words, stories, and crafts. Within Ottoman society, Armenians constituted a prosperous class. This affluence enabled them to send their children abroad for education with relative ease. Wealthy and well-educated Armenians found their place within the Turkish bureaucracy, the dominant governing structure of the time. Over the course of time, due both to demographic density and the positions Armenians held in upper social strata, the use of the Armenian language diminished. The Turkish writing tradition using Armenian script emerged as a means of communication through written language with the Armenian people, who adhered to the Christian faith, and as a way for them to express themselves in the same manner. This phenomenon can also be interpreted as an effort to preserve their own civilization and resist cultural alienation. This style can be observed in the poems and epics of folk poets, in written literature, translated works, magazines, newspapers, tombstone inscriptions, multilingual dictionaries, the Bible, and other religious texts. Furthermore, works were produced in a variety of fields including mathematics, medicine, astronomy, chemistry, religion, philosophy, humor, magazines, and arts. In the field of history, notable works include those that describe the cultural heritage and church histories of the cities where Armenians resided.

This study provides information about the formation and history of the Turkish writing culture using Armenian script. Examples from printed publications and manuscripts have been presented and analyzed.
