Synopsis

In this study, the unethical process behind the acceptance of human health and environmental health as a political value is analyzed by analyzing the 2000 film Erin Brockovich, directed by Steven Soderbergh, which tells the story of Erin Brockovich, an environmental activist and human rights defender, who reveals the destructive effects of the negligence of the responsible gas and electricity company and the effort to cover up the problem, based on the health problems experienced by the residents of the Hinkley region of California due to the toxic chromium substance mixed into the water. In this context, firstly, environmental pollution and its effects on human health are evaluated and the situation of water, which is one of the basic requirements for the continuity of human and other ecosystems, is analyzed within the framework of the adverse conditions brought about by climate change, then the ways in which water is polluted in terms of the current capitalist economic system (such as industrial wastes, oil spills, natural gas extraction and chemicals) and the type of polluted water (groundwater and surface water) are examined and the unethical behavior of corporations in terms of environmental pollution is exemplified. Finally, the ethical values related to the environmental outcomes of industrial production are analyzed by including chromium, the subject of the Erin Brokovich film, which has serious effects on human health if exposed to toxic levels on a continuous basis, and Pacific Gas and Electric Company's (PG&E) unethical corporate policy of concealing for many years that it had contaminated groundwater with hexavalen chromium waste, which causes many devastating health problems, including cancer.
