Synopsis
Türkiye frequently experiences earthquakes because of its location on active fault lines. This geographical reality has increased the importance of mechanisms to reduce earthquake-induced economic losses and provide individuals with safer living conditions. In this context, following the 1999 Marmara earthquake, the Turkish Catastrophe Insurance Pool (TCIP) was established and Compulsory Earthquake Insurance (CEI) was introduced. In this study, the current situation for Türkiye and the 11 provinces affected by the February 6 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes is presented for Türkiye and 11 provinces affected by the earthquake in terms of the demand for the CEI, and the actions to be taken to increase the insurance coverage rates are presented as policy recommendations. It was observed that the number of CEI policies issued across Türkiye increased in the first quarter of 2023, which includes the date of the earthquake, compared to other periods. The increase in regional insurance rates from 2022 to 2023 indicates that there is awareness among individuals to reduce the economic losses that may be caused by earthquake risk.
