Synopsis
Due to the fractured rock units at the base of the dam structures, the seepage capacity that will develop in the direction of upstream-downstream from the reservoir is a matter that needs to be evaluated in terms of the stability and safety of the structure and the amount of water accumulated in the reservoir. In such cases, dam grout curtains constructed provide the reduction of the seepage capacity and the uplift pressures acting on the dam body by creating an impermeability zone. It is known that practical application principles originating from trial and error and the rule of thumb have been used for a long time in the design and construction of dam grout curtains. With the results of the research carried out on this subject in recent years, it is possible to design and construct dam grout curtains based on structural, functional, and durability using analytical methods. Within the scope of this analytical method, the checks that must be considered in the dam grout curtain design are the impermeability criterion, Uplift pressure criterion, and Internal erosion criterion. These necessary checks are also explained in detail within the scope of this book chapter.
