Synopsis
Since its establishment, Türkiye has turned its face to the West and has set its goal to “attain the level of contemporary civilization”. In line with this determined goal, Türkiye has been interested in all economic, military and political institutions and organizations being established in the West and has made efforts to become a member of these organizations in a short time. The European Economic Community (EEC) was established in 1957 by six Western European countries with the Treaty of Rome. The European Economic Community has also been one of the organizations that Türkiye has shown interest in, as it is an important economic organization. Türkiye-European Union relations first began in 1959 with Türkiye’s membership application and the Ankara Agreement was signed between the two parties on September 12, 1963. Türkiye’s candidacy for full membership was registered at the EU Heads of State and Government Summit held in Helsinki on December 10-11, 1999. Following this development, it was decided at the Brussels Summit on 16-17 December that the “Full Membership Talks” with Türkiye would begin on 3 October 2005, and the Türkiye-EU full membership talks began on the specified date.
