Synopsis
Every developed and developing economy requires new resources. The governments at the helm of the economy prefer to reimbursement their resource needs through borrowing, which is much easier to access. However, borrowing that is not used and managed carefully turns into an addiction and creates an inextricable vicious cycle. Indeed, borrowing is one of the main economic problems that led to the downfall of the Ottoman Empire. Despite learning from the Ottoman’s bad experience, Türkiye succumbed to the allure of borrowing in the periods following Atatürk and has suffered from it. After the crises caused by debts, measures were taken, austerity policies were implemented, but these adjustments could not prevent the next debt crisis. The situation is not much different in the 2020s. In this study, the course of domestic borrowing and debt stock since the foundation of the Republic of Türkiye is examined in sub-periods.
