Synopsis

The aim of this study is to examine the activities carried out by tradesmen's unions, one of the cornerstones of Ottoman economic and social life, with the theory of coercive isomorphism, one of the important outcomes of institutionalization theory. In this context, it is discussed in which respect the activities carried out can be associated with coercive isomorphism. In order to reveal the relational inferences in the study, the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques, is used to analyze the Kadı Registry No. 25 of Istanbul, covering the dates 1765-1767. According to the case records obtained from the examined court books regarding the tradesmen's orders, it is determined that the activities carried out by the tradesmen were similar with the joint control of the tradesmen and the state. As a result of this observation, it is seen that the hegemony provided by the orders permeated artisan activities in the context of the coercive isomorphism theory. As a result of the analysis, it is determined that the tradesmen's activities within the framework of similar behavior patterns by taking into account the tradesmen's regulations can be explained by the theory of coercive isomorphism. As a result of the study, the Ottoman tradesmen organization has been examined from a different perspective and it is thought that the findings obtained will contribute to the literature.
