The Transformative Power of Technology in Social Sciences: New Interdisciplinary Approaches.
Synopsis
Today, the technology ecosystem affects all stakeholders of the society and becomes widespread day by day. These developments affect not only social life but also sectors. This change makes the products offered more digital. One of the sectors where the effects of digitalisation are seen is the tourism sector. In the tourism sector, the changing and transformative effects of the development of technology have started to be seen more and more.
In this section, the transformative effects of digitalisation, which emerged with the spread of technology, on the tourism sector and the dimensions of these effects are discussed. In this context, firstly, the interaction between technology and tourism is explained and then the concepts such as Digital Tourism, Tourism 4.0, Tourist 5.0 and Gastronomy 4.0 related to digitalisation and digitalisation in tourism are explained and the opportunities arising from digitalisation and their effects on different areas of tourism are explained.
Within the scope of Smart Tourism, twelve concepts of smart tourism such as social media, Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics and augmented reality (AR) were explained. In addition, the opportunities offered by these changing and transformative technologies in terms of personalising tourist experiences, destination management and sustainability are discussed. The chapter also analysed the opportunities that technology offers to the sector, but also the key issues such as ethical issues such as data privacy. The sectoral importance of sustainable technologies has been emphasised with examples of applications emerging as a result of digitalisation in tourism.
As a result, it is emphasised how technology-based tourism enriches the experiences of tourists and tourists, who are the main stakeholders of the tourism sector. Moreover, the advantages it provides to the enterprises in the tourism sector are explained. In addition, it was emphasised that in order for digitalisation and smart tourism practices to be successful, ethical principles should be adopted, data privacy should be taken into consideration and sustainability practices should be prioritised. This book chapter aims to contribute to all stakeholders of the sector by providing an interdisciplinary perspective on this transformation in tourism with digitalisation and the use of technology.
