Synopsis

This study deals with the combination of economics with psychology and the development of behavioral economics, and discusses the influential scientists and their works in the development of behavioral economics. The science of economics has put forward various schools by making use of many other social sciences. In particular, economics, which is intertwined with mathematics, has been inadequate in explaining human behavior and this has led to criticism over time. Thus, traditional economics, which assumes that individuals are rational, was criticized more and more with the studies conducted and behavioral economics was born under the influence of psychology. With the studies and especially the Nobel Prizes, behavioral economics has spread more and more and has formed the basis of the studies of many scientists. Behavioral economics, which analyzes the decision-making processes of individuals in depth, has benefited from many concepts within the scope of psychology and characterized individuals as irrational in their decision-making processes. Behavioral economics focuses on the decision-making processes of individuals and aims to enable individuals to make better choices. In particular, strategies such as nudging have shown that individuals can be directed towards better and healthier choices. Behavioral economics has come a long way with important scientists such as Daniel Kahneman, Amos Tversky and Richard Thaler. Accordingly, this study aims to compile the knowledge in the field by discussing the historical development of behavioral economics and the scientists who have been influential in this process. In addition, many concepts are explained in the study and it aims to provide a broad perspective. The study is unique in this respect and provides a solid foundation for future research.
