Synopsis
This study examines the socioeconomic factors influencing tobacco consumption decisions in Turkish households. The research is based on data from the 2019 Budget Survey of the Turkish Statistical Institute. The educational level, age, gender, occupation, and household income levels of individuals were considered key determinants of tobacco consumption. The findings reveal that tobacco use is more prevalent in households with lower educational levels and younger individuals. Larger households and those with a higher number of male members also exhibit increased tobacco consumption, while wealthier households tend to consume more tobacco products. Increasing education levels and improving household income are seen as crucial steps in reducing tobacco consumption. Additionally, campaigns aimed at raising awareness among the younger population could be effective in decreasing tobacco use. Raising awareness among the young population about the harms of tobacco consumption and organizing educational programs on this issue will provide significant benefits in reducing tobacco use. Future studies should explore the impacts of socioeconomic and demographic factors in greater detail and consider regional differences.
